Most people find it easy to meet regularly with a family physician for their physical health needs. Unfortunately, those same people may find it difficult to visit a therapist regularly for their mental health needs. The good news is that the expansion of online therapy is rapidly breaking mental health barriers across the nation. Here’s what you should know about the rise of online therapy and how it can benefit you.

The Importance of Mental Health

Not too many years ago, society held a largely negative view of mental health disorders. Many avoided talking about psychological concerns because such discussions were considered taboo. Thankfully, such antiquated views are rapidly becoming things of the past as mental health education becomes more prevalent.

A person’s mental health is just as important to their overall well-being as their physical and emotional health. Poor mental health can negatively impact a person’s professional and personal relationships and accomplishments. On the other hand, someone with good mental health has an easier time coping with daily stresses and living a productive, fulfilling life.

Common Barriers to Mental Health Treatment

Some people may avoid talking to a therapist because they don’t know where to find affordable therapy. Others may be nervous at the prospect of talking to another person about feelings, behaviors, and traumas they’ve kept pent up inside for years. Yet another reason someone might not receive therapy is if there’s a lack of qualified therapists in their area. This is especially common in rural areas with limited access to mental health resources.

Finally, fear of being judged by others may cause some people to avoid seeking in-person therapy. They may feel anxious about potentially seeing someone they know in the waiting room or while walking into the therapist’s office. Fortunately, the rise of online therapy helps break many of the barriers that have traditionally kept people from accessing mental health care.

How Online Therapy Is Expanding Mental Health Access

The COVID-19 pandemic forced many in-person therapists to offer their services online for the first time. This was initially a stressful process for some providers, but it has sparked an online therapy trend that will likely continue to grow. Research shows that digital therapy is comparable to in-person therapy in terms of treatment effectiveness.

Online therapy is bringing mental healthcare services to those who might never receive them otherwise. It’s demolishing barriers that once made therapy less appealing or even unattainable for some demographics. Here are a few of the specific ways digital therapy is expanding mental health access across the nation for people from all walks of life.

Privacy Protection

Meeting with a therapist online removes the need to travel to a physical location and spend time in a waiting room. Thus, it enhances privacy protection and makes it less likely for the patient to be seen by any potentially curious or judgmental observers.

Although therapy has largely broken free from the stigma that once surrounded it, some patients still prefer to be discreet about their treatments. Since digital therapy can be accessed from the comfort of one’s own home, it’s ideal for anyone with high expectations of privacy.

Ease of Access

Some people may find it prohibitively difficult to attend in-person therapy appointments. They may have physical disabilities that make it difficult or impossible to visit a brick-and-mortar location regularly. Or they might live in a rural area with limited mental health resources located within a reasonable distance. These types of barriers have traditionally discouraged many people from getting the mental health assistance they needed.

Now that online therapy is so readily available, it removes these barriers and makes it possible for practically anyone to access mental health care. People from practically anywhere in the nation can now receive high-quality care as long as they have a reliable internet connection or cell phone service. Online therapy also tends to be cheaper than in-person therapy, making it more easily accessible for people looking for the most affordable mental health care services.

Treatment Flexibility

It’s no secret that many Millennials, Gen Zers, and Gen Alphas struggle to have in-person conversations. They may feel much more comfortable talking or texting on the phone. The good news is that digital therapy is so flexible that in many cases, patients can choose their preferred communication method.  Some of the most common available communication methods for online therapy include:

  • Telephone calls
  • Secure text messages
  • Video conferencing
  • Online chats
  • Email conversations

Patients should check with their preferred online therapist to find out what types of therapy sessions are available.

Convenience

In-person therapy requires patients to spend time driving to and from their in-person therapy sessions. Commuting back and forth takes extra time out of the patient’s day and can make it harder to squeeze a therapy session into an already busy schedule. Adults who receive in-person therapy may also have to arrange for childcare while they’re visiting with their therapist.

With online therapy options, there’s no need to find a childcare provider to watch your kids while you drive to a therapy appointment. Since you can receive digital therapy from any location, you can stay home with your kids while receiving treatment. You also don’t need to worry about wear and tear on your vehicle when you’re no longer driving back and forth to your preferred provider.

Conclusion

Thanks to modern technology, it’s now possible to receive mental health care from a licensed therapist without ever leaving your home. If you’ve avoided therapy in the past because of any of the common barriers listed here, online therapy may be the solution you’ve been waiting for. Consider scheduling a consultation with an online therapist to see if this treatment avenue is a good fit for your mental healthcare needs.
